In Gallery B for the month of April we are very lucky and happy to have the work of Mindy Kober.

"As America enters the Twenty- first Century, our cultural banners and consumer lifestyles have extended to a far greater audience than ever before. I, as an artist, am particularly interested in our behavioral traits and the role which environment plays as a determinate. I juxtapose very stereotypical American characters as icons into foreign environments, or create an environment where these icons can interact with foreign characters or figures. At a more subtle level, I imbue the actions of children and adult characters with very different consequences. While on the surface, children may seem innocent in their foreign journeys, the weight of their cultural imperiative foreshadows the inevitable next step. Adulthood brings journeys in which the steps are destructive and deliberate. Pristine landscapes of mountains, trees, and rivers are forever altered and swept aside by the march of American progress. I want to challenge the viewer to look beyond the icons, the characters, and the settings; yet see the simplicity, both in the scene and the solution."

Studio 27.28, Art Gallery is proud to present art by Ed Trask, a solo show (with artist Mindy Kober in Gallery B), on April 4, 2009 (First Saturday) from 6-9pm. Studio 27.28 is located at 2728 Girard Ave Philadelphia PA 19130. Ed Trask, based out of Richmond VA, paints dilapidated buildings, soon to be developed landscapes, forgotten architectural gems, and telephone and power lines that connect to the abstract.

“I paint a symbolic portrait of themes dealing with preservation, spirituality, and a social, moral loss of history in a consumer driven age. There is a conflict between composition, surface, and representation, and a battle between an almost graffiti like graphic flatness with a heavy-handed painterly approach.” - Trask

While in school at Virginia Commonwealth University, Ed Trask spent every waking hour painting and playing music in the mid 80’s Richmond punk scene. By his junior year, after many attempts for gallery attention, he decided to make the dilapidated buildings surrounding VCU his gallery.

The paintings were directly applied to the buildings, or screwed onto the buildings illegally until the city was covered. In 1992, Ed graduated with a painting degree and moved to Washington D.C. where he started touring with the Dischord records band the Holy Rollers, & continued to paint illegal murals all over the world. Three years later he moved back to Richmond to join the band Kepone.

While the demand for his paintings started to grow, he started a gallery and made a go at mural and sign work. The work has never stopped flowing in, and Ed Trask’s work has been collected into many permanent collections including Gap, Capitol One, Fortune Magazine, N.B.C. Philip Morris, Media General and Play Inc. Ed now plays in the bands AVAIL and Corntooth, continues to have art shows worldwide and has his studio in Richmond Virginia where he lives with his beautiful wife and two children.

Kevin Margitich’s insightful and peaceful paintings reflect on the conflict of the PA winter, the wearing on the body and soul verses the beauty of nature. Margitich, now from Philadelphia, has shown throughout PA.

While Jonathan K. Slingluff focuses the lens on the Poconos. Slingluff, better known for his paintings or portrait photography is showing photos, part of "North of Lake Wallenpaupack", a book that he has been working on since the passing of his father Karl P. Slingluff in the summer of 2002. This book will be available through Studio 27.28 later this year.

Jon uses his pen and ink to interpret how he saw life as a child and how he sees it today. He graduated in 2002 from Oakland's CCA with a degree in illustration and still lives in Oakland, designing furniture and drawing pictures in his home studio.

Dude, let’s have an Art Show Opening. That’s what Studio 27.28 said a while back and look what a fine job they’ve done for themselves and any members of the Philadelphia community at large who would enjoy taking a artific ponder at the productions of three gentlemen: Jonathan Wakuda Fischer, Ralph Stollenwerk, and Mathew Cole.

Studio 27.28’s current gallery display began with a grand opening on December 6 and runs through December 28. Attendance is free for everyone and all ages are welcome.

As a perfectly untrained art observer, it seems to me that there may be some pretty cool pieces there. While Mr. Fischer does traditional canvas painting, you can also see Mr. Stollenwerk’s art applied to wood panel, and Mr. Cole’s to tree trunks. Don’t take my word for it. The gallery is posted on Studio 27.28’s website here (studio2728.com). See the pieces for yourself. Buy them online if you want to, though the trip to see them in reality is probably worth the effort.

Judging from MySpace entries. Some might say this is the best studio in town. Hours are by chance, or by appointment Monday through Friday, 3 PM to 7 PM. By chance? Hmm. So…do you feel lucky? Well, do ya? Punk? Sorry sorry sorry. My little Dirty Harry flashback has absolutely no business showing itself in the midst of an art column. At least it wasn’t like last week, when I was fixated on Andy Williams.

Though they have managed to cleverly disguise the location of the studio and it has absolutely no connection to the name, Studio 27.28 can be found at 2728 Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. Get thee hence immediately!

You young hipsters might find this hard to believe, but there was a time before art began to appear on what has become The Bog Art Wall. Urban legend has it that Jonathan K. Slingluff was the first artist to exhibit at the Scranton bar. Back then, we called him Skip. Ah, but that was when we knew what to call everyone who walked in or out of The Bog. Before Test Pattern came and went and well before Skip moved to Philadelphia and got married and opened his own gallery, Studio 2728.

OK, so maybe we're getting a little carried away here. It's only been two years this month that Skip skipped town. And yes, he did have a show at Vida Tapas Bar and Grill last year. But this winter will be the first time in four years since he's shown at The Bog and, by golly, it warms our guts.

Situated six blocks from the zoo and two blocks from "gang banger heaven," Studio 2728 is technically located in Philly's art museum section, Slingluff informed. It has hosted six exhibit openings in the past seven months, picking up where the influential Lineage Gallery left off by showing primarily West Coast artists. Shows are currently booked through December 2010.

Slingluff's most recent photography has focused largely on a series of hopeful porn actresses/models. It's his paintings that will hang at The Bog this month, however.

"I've been creating painting for a wall, in that there is an argyle pattern, almost a wallpaper pattern with a piece of artwork placed on that pattern. That's what I've been trying to mimic," he said.
